Each of the fivefold ministry gifts have specific ministry functions. Here are 5 for the prophet:
Note: This is only a partial listing
1. A prophet is second in order of the Church (I Cor 12:29)
2. Prophets minister in confirmation and exhortation in the Church (see Acts 15:22, Ezra 5:1; 6:14).
3. Prophets will manifest their gift in 4 ways: (a) Exhortation- to stir up; (b) Edification-to build up; (c) Comfort-to bind up; and (d) Conviction-to open up the heart and expose the secrets within, causing people to fall down and worship God.
4. Prophets are not infallible and their utterances must be judged by the Word of God (I Cor 14:29, 30; Gal 2:9-14). A prophet must be humble enough to allow his word to be judged.
5. Prophets must have their spirits under control and be subject to the HOly Spirit.
We will look at the Office of the Evangelist next time.
